Our Featured Album - Ben's first!
On September 10, 2001, my Dad passed away. On September 11, 2001, I was sitting at my computer writing his eulogy when my wife came in and told me that a plane had just flown in to the Twin Towers in New York City. My Dad was a pilot for the U.S Navy in World War 2. I was immediately struck by a correlation between my Dad flying a plane to fight for his country and a plane being flown to destroy. I believe he may have 'seen' it coming and decided to check out hours before the carnage. I was also in the middle of recording my first solo album. I had a picture of a Grumman Wildcat, the plane my Dad flew, coming in to land on the aircraft carrier. I put it in Photoshop and twisted the photo. The image then looked how I felt. I have always been curious about the snow flake. Every one is completely symmetrical and yet every flake is completely different. I think random order is surrendering to the laws of nature and time. So the cover became the image of the twisted plane and I called the album Random Order. This was my way of expressing what had just happened over the previous few days. The recording was done with a Tascam Portastudio 488, the last of the analogue home recording units. 8 tracks on a cassette tape. I had to be very careful bouncing tracks! I recorded the whole album in a room so I used drum machines and the bass direct to tape.
